Strength Training for Women Over 50 | Fitness Yard Edinburgh
19/10/2026
At Fitness Yard, a gym in Granton, Edinburgh, we believe strength training is about much more than how you look. It’s about staying strong, maintaining your independence, protecting your long-term health and continuing to do the things you love as you get older.
And if I ever need a reminder of what that looks like, I think of Arleen.
At 50+, Arleen is what I’d call a true boss. She has a demanding, high-pressure career in finance, yet she makes time for her health, prioritises her training and continues to challenge herself.
She is proof that strength training for women over 50 isn’t about slowing down. It’s about building the strength to keep moving forward.
From Back Pain to Deadlifting Over 70kg
Arleen’s journey hasn’t always been straightforward.
Before we started working together in 2020, she was struggling with a painful back injury. She had been told she shouldn’t do weight training, leaving her worried about losing the strength, confidence and freedom that exercise had given her.
But avoiding strength training altogether wasn’t the only option.
We started with rehabilitation exercises and focused on rebuilding the basics. Gradually, we introduced structured strength training, increased the demands of her workouts and built habits around hydration, balanced nutrition and daily movement.
Step by step, Arleen rebuilt her strength and confidence.
Today, she deadlifts over 70kg in her training sessions and is stronger than she was in her 30s.
Her progress shows why personalised strength training matters, particularly when you’re managing an injury or returning to exercise after a break. You don’t need to start with heavy weights or push yourself to the limit. You need the right starting point, a plan that suits your body and guidance to help you progress safely.
Strength Training Is About More Than Lifting Weights
Like many women in their 50s and beyond, Arleen also experiences challenges with sleep and recovery.
When you have a demanding career and a busy life, poor sleep can leave you feeling exhausted, irritable and short of energy. It can also affect how well you recover from exercise.
We can’t control every aspect of recovery, but we can adjust training to suit how someone is feeling. Sometimes that means changing the intensity of a session. At other times, it means focusing on simple habits outside the gym.
For Arleen, these include regular brisk walks, getting outdoors and maintaining a balanced approach to nutrition.
Daylight helps regulate the body's internal clock, while regular physical activity can support cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing and sleep quality. Combined with appropriate strength training, these habits contribute to a more sustainable approach to health.
You don’t need a perfect routine. You need habits that work with your life.
Why Women Over 50 Should Start Strength Training
As we age, maintaining muscle strength, balance and physical function becomes increasingly important. For women approaching or going through menopause, strength training is also a valuable part of maintaining overall health and supporting bone health.
Regular resistance training can help improve strength, maintain muscle mass, support everyday movement and make activities such as carrying shopping, climbing stairs, travelling and enjoying outdoor adventures feel more manageable.
You don’t need to have trained for years to benefit. You don’t need to be naturally athletic, and you certainly don’t need to feel confident before walking into a gym.
You simply need a starting point that suits your current ability.
At Fitness Yard, our approach to personal training and small group strength training is built around the individual. We help you develop the foundations, learn how to lift with confidence and progress at a pace that works for you.
Whether you’re returning after an injury, starting strength training for the first time or trying to rebuild a routine after years of putting everyone else first, you deserve coaching that meets you where you are.
When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Like Arleen
Arleen inspires me because she understands that looking after your health isn’t something you do for a few weeks before giving up. It’s an investment in the person you want to be in your 60s, 70s and beyond.
She makes time for training, plans her nutrition and enjoys a glass of wine at the weekend. She has found balance, not restriction.
We all have demanding schedules, responsibilities and days when we simply don’t feel like exercising. But building a sustainable routine doesn’t mean getting everything right. It means finding a way to keep going, adapting when life changes and remembering why your health matters.
Your future strength starts with the choices you make today.
